Patron Saint of Immigrants
Mother Cabrini is the patron saint of immigrants. As an immigrant herself, Francesca Cabrini, made it her mission to aid the new arrivals. She is highly associated with the great influx of Italian immigrants coming to the United States in the late 1800s, but her hands touched every corner of the Earth.
Mother Cabrini tackled the hardship of immigration and getting established in a foreign country from several positions. Immigrants needed to learn the language and skills, so she built schools. Immigrants needed quality healthcare, so she built hospitals and clinics. Immigrant children who were either abandoned or orphaned needed care, so she built orphanages. Immigrants who were moved and received a calling to join her, so she built convents. She built communities for some of the most vulnerable people. She was, and still is, a savior. Her love for Jesus drove her to create the impact that continues to this day. She shared the love of the Sacred Heart to all who would listen.
The mural located in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NY was created by Adam Cvijanovic and pays tribute to generations of immigrants who came to New York in search of faith and hope. The mural prominently features Mother Cabrini who arrived in New York on March 31, 1889

For Mother Cabrini, every person was worthy of dignity and compassion because each belonged to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her vision of humanity united in charity was far ahead of her time, embracing people of different cultures and languages as one family of God. The phrase “the world is too small” captures both her courage and her belief that love, rooted in faith, should reach every corner of the earth.
