The Early Years

Maria Francesca Cabrini was born prematurely on July 15, 1850, in the small Italian village of Sant’Angelo Lodigiano. According to tradition, a flock of white doves circled her family home on the day of her birth—an extraordinary sight that her family regarded as a sign of grace and purity.

Raised in a home deeply rooted in faith, Francesca was profoundly influenced by her parents, Agostino Cabrini and Stella Odini. She watched her mother pray faithfully each morning and evening, while stories of missionaries serving in distant lands awakened in her a desire to bring the love of Christ to the world. Her older sister, Rosa, also nurtured her spiritual life through her example of prayer and charity.

At just eight years old, Francesca experienced a profound spiritual awakening during her Confirmation. Years later, she recalled:

"I felt something I could not explain. It seemed as though I were no longer of this world; my heart was filled with glory. I know it was the Holy Spirit."

From that moment, she resolved to give herself completely to Jesus.

As a child, Francesca dreamed of becoming a missionary in China. She would place violets in tiny paper boats and send them floating down a stream, imagining they were missionaries traveling to distant lands. It was a simple childhood pastime that foreshadowed her extraordinary destiny.

Yet her path was not without obstacles. Frail in health throughout her life, Francesca was rejected by two religious communities. Undeterred, she became a schoolteacher and later devoted six challenging years to serving at an orphanage.

In 1880, encouraged to pursue her missionary calling, she founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The little girl who once sent violets sailing down a stream would one day cross oceans herself, bringing faith, compassion, and hope to countless lives.

Her extraordinary mission was only beginning.
